Autodesk Revit files (Models, Families, and Templates) are strictly one-way upgrades. A file saved or created in Revit 2026 can only be opened by Revit 2026 or subsequent versions. It is physically impossible to open a Revit 2026 file in Revit 2025, 2024, or older.
When you open an older Revit file (e.g. Revit 2024) in Revit 2026, Revit will perform an irreversible upgrade. If you save the file, it will be updated to the 2026 format permanently. Always create backups before opening older models in newer versions.
Revit files are OLE structured storage databases. Tucked inside the file is a metadata stream called BasicFileInfo. This stream holds information written during the last save, including the version format, active central path, and worksharing state. This app parses that exact stream without requiring a Revit installation.
